Generation of Electric Energy

Electricity from Petrobras? Exactly. Thinking beyond oil, we also perform in the electric energy sector with thermoelectric, wind, and hydroelectric power plants.

We have been building thermoelectric plants since 2000 and have enhanced our participation in the sector until marking our presence in the entire productive chain.

Our generating park is composed of 15 units – self-owned, belonging to subsidiaries or to companies we hold equity stakes in. The plants' total power generation capacity is upwards of 5,000 megawatts (MW).

Wind power is used on the large scale around the world, and tends to grow in the power matrix. To generate power using the force of the winds, we have had a pilot unit in Macau (state of Rio Grande do Norte), with 1.8-MW installed power, since 2004.

Our goal is to reach 169 MW of electric energy per renewable energy source in 2010.

Small hydroelectric plants are also part of our investments. This type of plant allows the needs of small urban centers, rural regions, and industrial units to be better met.

Our planning calls for the construction of 13 of these plants, in four states. When the units are ready, our power generation capacity will be 30 MW.

The Petrobras Distribuidora subsidiary also participates in the electric energy sector providing services such as power efficiency, co-generation, generation with biomass, marketing power and with generation at the end.
