On November 17, the world will pay tribute to master Heitor Villa-Lobos to remember the 50 years of his death. Petrobras has already been paying tribute to him for a long time.
Since the late 1980's, the Company has sponsored projects that honor the great musician, whether by registering his work, recovering and digitizing an important part of his collection, by qualifying and professionalizing young musicians or holding events (concerts, shows and exhibitions) to draw the public at large closer to his legacy, an important cultural heritage of the country.
As all geniuses, Villa-Lobos was a man who was ahead of his time. He dared in form and content. He was acknowledged both nationally and internationally in life, and today holds one of the most important positions in the memory of Brazilian music.

- Petrobras Pro-Music Orchestra, 1988

The OPPM (Petrobras Pro-Music Orchestra, today the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra), picked "Sinfonieta" No. 1 and "Bachianas Brasileiras "No. 4 (Prelude) to form part of the repertoire of its first CD to celebrate Petrobras' 45th anniversary. The work, conducted by maestro Armando Prazeres, was named for important awards in the Classical Music category.

The sponsorship for the Recovery and Digitalization of the Villa-Lobos Museum's Audiovisual Collection, the content of which is formed by materials on 16-mm and 35-mm film; and in the VHS and U-Matic formats (a few of which unknown and never seen before), in addition to selected photographs and scores, which would be recovered and digitalized, began.

Petrobras starts sponsoring the Villa-Lobos and Children project, which is connected to the Villa-Lobos Museum and is directed by Turíbio Santos. Students coming from low-income communities in the city of Rio de Janeiro and who already have some knowledge about music (acquired in other similar projects) participated in the project. Aiming at becoming professionals, these students then go on to form an orchestra.

Continuation of the sponsorship for the Villa-Lobos and children project aiming to expand the project's limits of occupying classrooms, rehearsals and concerts, beyond the facilities of the Villa-Lobos Museum, its main venue. The idea is to occupy all of the city's museums, as during a rehearsal promoted by the National History Museum last year, aiming to draw students and the public at large nearer to Villa-Lobos' work.

Events pay tribute to the great musician
Several events were scheduled, in Brazil and abroad, to mark the five decades of the death of Villa-Lobos. As usual, Petrobras is present in a few of them:
47th Villa-Lobos Festival - Included in the public selection for Music Festivals of the 2008/2009 Petrobras Cultural Program. A traditional event that disseminates the work of Villa-Lobos and of other Brazilian composers, scheduled for November 06 to 28, in several cultural venues in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Viva Villa Exhibition – Event based on an interesting proposal of recreating the composer's universe, allowing the public to get to know, in a fun manner, the references that inspired his creative process.
Villa in Concert - An integral part of the Viva Villa Exhibition, the event will offer the public a series of presentations about the work of Villa-Lobos, to be held at the Central Courtyard of the Arquivo Nacional and executed by orchestras, chamber orchestras, choirs, groups and soloists.
