A championship that brings together some of the best surfers in the country with entertainment, sports, culture and social and environmental actions. It was based on this that we created the Petrobras on the Waves Tour, the latest addition to the 2011 Brazilian surfing season. The event will take place in two stages, in Guarujá (state of São Paulo), on June 22 to 26, and in Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro, on September 21 to 25.
The new surfing event will be held in the male and female categories and will count toward ranking points for the Brazil Tour, the access division for the elite of Brazilian surfing, Brazil Surf Pro - also sponsored by Petrobras.
The tournament will take place over five days, beginning on Wednesday and ending on Sunday. The finals will occur on different days. The women will compete for the tournament title on Saturday, while the men on Sunday.
Attractions on the beach
As well as the surfers’ extreme maneuvers, beachgoers will find a range of other attractions. The entertainment will include an exhibit the Art and Graffiti Tent. In the tent, guest artists will provide workshops, teaching techniques and concepts about the subject. Students from public and private schools may participate in the event.
In the Game Space, video game fans will find five consoles with some of the most renowned extreme sports games for the PlayStation 2 and 3 platforms.
Guarujá will host a freestyle motocross exhibit
During the Guarujá stage, the Petrobras on the Waves Tour will take a freestyle motocross exhibition to the beach, bringing together some of the best acrobatic riders in the country.
After all that adrenaline, the next stop is the Well-being Tent, where the public will find relaxation and health tips with the help of nutritionists, physiotherapists, masseurs, and other professionals.
New talents
On the waves, the attractions go beyond the main tournament. Three separate contests will be held to boost the adrenaline even further. The first is the battle of up and coming talents which consists of a parallel competition between young prospects of Brazilian surfing (eight girls and eight boys), nominated by the surfing federations.
Interstate Contest
To further encourage the athletes and the crowd on the beach, the Petrobras on the Waves Tour will also promote an interstate contest. On the first day of competition, the athletes will receive a sticker with the flag of their home state which they can affix to the edge of their boards. For each round contested, the competitor scores points. State rankings will be announced at the end of the competition.
International contest
Another attraction will be the international contest which takes place on Friday evening (confirmation of the schedule depending on wave conditions and the weather). This is a man-to-man contest between a devoted Brazilian surfer and an icon of world surfing - to be announced - reproducing traditional rivalry from the World Championship Tour (WCT) and the World Qualifying Series (WQS). The contest will last for 30 minutes.
