Technology to take you further

We help move the economy and also build the paths to move it.  The pavement of streets and highways is the structure that supports mobility with comfort and safety. It has a direct impact on transportation costs, on energy efficiency of the engines and pollutant emissions.

We develop asphalt products with technology and quality to withstand the severe impacts of traffic and weather, and we sell them to asphalt distributors, concessionaires and waterproofing industries.

Petroleum Asphalt Cement (CAP)

Asphalt is a high-viscosity oil byproduct, with waterproofing and adhesive properties, non-volatile in room temperature and atmospheric pressure, black or dark brown in color. The main application of CAP is in the paving industry, where it is used as a binder in the production of asphalt concrete that covers most of the highways we know.

Applications

CAP is used in the production of hot-machined bituminous concrete (CBUQ), hot premixed concrete (PMQ), hot-machined asphalt sand (AAUQ), among other types of mixtures. It is also used in the production of waterproofing products for civil construction, such as asphalt and water repellent blankets.

In addition, our asphalt cements are the major inputs used in the manufacture of polymer-modified asphalt, rubber-asphalt and industrial asphalts in general.

Currently, Petrobras makes two types of CAP available to its customers: the conventional CAP and CAP Pro.

Conventional CAP

It fully complies with the specifications of the National Petroleum Agency, being a material of excellent quality, in line with market needs. It is available in two versions, which differ mainly due to the product's penetration characteristics:

CAP 30/45

It is a more resistant material, suited for conditions of moderate to heavy traffic and/or regions with a warmer climate. Currently, CAP 30/45 is produced in the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC and REPLAN.

CAP 50/70

Material that has a slightly higher viscosity and a lower penetration; it is used in moderate or light traffic conditions and/or cooler climate regions. Currently, CAP 50/70 is produced in the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC, REPLAN, REVAP, REPAR and REFAP.

It is important to point out that specifications and uses may vary according to technical standards and the specific needs of each project.

CAP Pro

CAP Pro is the new family of petroleum asphalt cement of Petrobras and represents significant progress in the transition to a low-carbon and more sustainable future. These products not only fully meet ANP requirements, but also reduce the environmental impact of their applications, making an important contribution to a more promising future, both for society and the environment.

Through the CAP Pro family, Petrobras reinforces its commitment to boost the paving sector towards a more aware and responsible development.

Currently, the CAP Pro family has two product lines: CAP Pro AP and CAP Pro W.

CAP Pro AP

It is the high-penetration CAP line, ideal for RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) recycling services in paving, with rejuvenating capacity, waiving the use of additives that perform this job.  CAP Pro AP, therefore, provides greater sustainability to the paving chain as it generates less paving waste due to reuse and, consequently, decreases the use of virgin material.

In addition, CAP Pro AP has excellent properties to be used as an input for the production of Polymer-Modified Asphalts (AMPs), Rubber Asphalts (ABs), Asphalt Emulsions (EAs) and waterproofing products, among other industrial asphalts.

Currently, CAP Pro AP is available with a penetration range of 70/85 and is produced at REVAP, with production at other refineries being studied.

CAP Pro W

It is the CAP line specially formulated for application at reduced temperatures (WMA - warm mix asphalt), generating energy savings during the paving process. Its formulation allows the machining process and application on the track to take place at temperatures up to 40°C lower than those traditionally used, without the need to change equipment and paving processes.

Main benefits:
  • Reduction of energy consumption by up to 35%.

  • Possibility of using higher RAP percentages.

  • Reduced carbon intensity.

  • Better working conditions in machining and application.

  • Greater agility and safety in the application process.

  • It enables releasing the runway more quickly.

  • It allows application on very cold days.

  • Performance equal to or higher than hot asphalt concrete.

CAP Pro W, initially in the 30/45 penetration range, will be made available to our customers shortly, first at REVAP, with production at other refineries being studied.

Petroleum Diluted Asphalt (ADP)

Asphalt cement with the addition of diluent that has ideal fluidity for cold paving services. It is a medium cure product, where the diluent acts as a vehicle for application, and, after evaporation, it becomes semi-solid or solid. The kinematic viscosity of Petrobras ADP is between 30 and 60 cSt @60°C.

Main applications

Its main use in paving is in the priming of granular and cohesive base layers, chemically treated or not, with the objective of waterproofing them and providing adhesion conditions with asphalt coating.

Answer your questions about asphalt products

What is asphalt cement?
It is a highly-viscous material with thermoplastic behavior, used in hot paving services. At room temperature, asphalt cement is semi-solid or solid.
How is petroleum diluted asphalt made?
Petroleum diluted asphalt is made from asphalt cement with the addition of diluent that has ideal fluidity for cold paving services.
What are Petrobras' asphalt products?
The following are asphalt products of Petrobras: petroleum diluted asphalt (ADP), petroleum asphalt cement (CAP) and CAP Pro, specially formulated for applications at reduced temperatures.
What are the advantages of Petrobras’ asphalt products?
Petrobras' asphalt products offer the advantages of resisting the severe impacts of traffic and weather. Our CAP Pro also reduces energy consumption by up to 35%.
