We not only produce energy to move vehicles and machines, but also to protect equipment, ensuring better use of the energy consumed. Base stock is the main component of lubricants (more than 90%), contributing to greater energy efficiency and durability of equipment.
Main Applications
The main applications are in the formulation of automotive and industrial lubricants, including engine, transmission, and gear oils, the function of which is to reduce friction and, consequently, the wear and tear of metallic parts in contact, and also protect against corrosion, remove heat, promote sealing, and clean the system.
Lubricants may have other functions, such as: transmission of force and movement (hydraulic fluid), electrical insulation (insulating oils), aid in the processing of rubbers (extending oils for application in tires and other artifacts) and surface protection (protective oils and greases lubricants) and pharmaceuticals (mineral oil).

Quality requirements
Base oils can be synthetic (of petrochemical or oleochemical origin) or mineral (originated from petroleum refining). Its main quality requirements are:
- Viscosity
- Viscosity index (viscosity variation with temperature)
- Fluidity (flow at low temperatures)
- Adequate volatility under the conditions of use
- Stability at high temperatures

In our refineries, we produce mineral base stock made up of a complex blend of hydrocarbons, from gas oils from vacuum distillation or deasphalted oils from specific petroleum.
Petrobras Base Stock is sold to the lubricants industry, which formulates, fills, and distributes it, and to the tire and rubber product industries. Our line is divided into two categories:
They have low pour points and are used in low temperature applications.
They have higher viscosity indexes, being indicated for systems where large temperature variations occur during use, such as in automotive engines.
